Many people believe that their car battery is what provides the power for it to run. This isn't the case. The battery is responsible for providing the energy that the electric starter motor needs to start the car. When the vehicle is running, the alternator provides the energy that the electrical system needs. It also provides the energy to charge the car battery. Basically, the alternator works as a generator.

How To Tell If You Need Alternator Service?

Like most parts of your vehicle, your alternator will wear out at one point or another and need to be replaced. There are a few ways that you can tell if you need alternator service.

• If you see a warning light on your instrument cluster that reads “GEN” or “ALT”, you should bring your vehicle to the mechanic.
• Dim dashboard and interior lights
• The instrument gauges don't work
• The smell of burning rubber due to a frying belt
• Strange sounds coming from under the hood

Battery or Alternator?

Because the battery and the alternator are so closely connected, it can be difficult to tell if you are having issues with the battery or the alternator. Fortunately, there is a simple way that you can figure it out. If your car won't start, jump the battery. If you remove the jumper cables and the vehicle continues to run, the battery is the problem. If it dies shortly after disconnecting the battery, the problem is with the alternator. If it is the alternator, you will need to bring your car to the mechanic for alternator repair, alternator replacement or an alternator rebuild.

Average Lifespan Of An Alternator

An alternator’s average lifespan is about seven years or 100,000 to 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. However, every vehicle isn’t the same. It is possible for your alternator to go at 80,000 miles. It is a good idea to have your alternator inspected every five to seven years to catch any potential issues before they become expensive problems.
