Semi-Synthetic Oil Change Russ Darrow Nissan Milwaukee

Semi-Synthetic Blend Oil Change

Is Semi-Synthetic Different from Conventional Oil?

Synthetic oils are made with additives to extend their life and provide improved performance in a vehicle's engine. It does the same job as traditional oil by providing lubrication and cooling to the pistons are in motion, but does a better job and lasts much longer. The downside of synthetic oil is that it can be much more expensive per oil change than conventional oil, even though the time between oil changes makes them about the same price over the car's lifetime. Semi-synthetic oil is a blend of the two, providing some of the synthetic oil benefits without the same cost per oil change. As such it is suitable for most vehicles unless they were specifically designed with a recommendation for fully synthetic oil.

The Reason Behind Oil Changes

Oil changes are a routine part of regular car maintenance because, over time, the oil begins to break down from the heat and friction it absorbs during regular use of the vehicle as intended. In order to continue providing the lubrication it is intended to provide, the old oil has to be drained out and replaced with new. It isn't a particularly difficult job for an experienced technician, it doesn't take very long, but it has to be performed. Conventional oil is generally changed after about 3,000 miles of driving, while semi-synthetic oil can last for closer to 5,000 miles, depending on the brand of oil and recommendations according to the vehicle manufacturer.

What Can Happen if Oil Isn't Changed on Time

When the oil isn't changed at appropriate intervals, it rarely has an immediate effect on the vehicle's performance. As long as there is still oil in the reservoir and the proper amount, what's more likely to happen, is the car won't reach the anticipated amount of mileage before being declared a loss. The exception is if there is a leak and the oil level is too low, or if there are contaminants in the oil. Such conditions can cause the car to break down and require much more repair work than the oil change would have been, which would have found and corrected the problem. Semi-synthetic oil is ideal for most drivers as it doesn't need to be changed as often as traditional oil, but is changed often enough to find minor problems before they get worse.
